Street Child World Cup

New Generation is excited to be chosen as the Burundian representative at the Street Child World Cup (SCWC), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in March 2014.

The SCWC is a global movement for street children to receive the protection and opportunities that all children are entitled to. Ahead of each FIFA World Cup, the SCWC unites street children from across five continents to play football and join in a unique international conference. Through football, art and campaigning, the SCWC aims to challenge the negative perceptions and treatment of street children around the world, and as representatives from Burundi, we are overjoyed to be able to take-part in this movement and to promote and challenge those same perceptions of street child in Burundi and further afield.

We will be joined in Rio by teams from all over the world, including Brazil (obviously!), the Philippines, Ukraine, Tanzania, Kenya, Sierra Leone, India and Pakistan, and we cant wait to meet with each team and take part in some healthy competition!

As the SCWC approaches, New Generation is busy training with some of our boys and girls often 3 times per week, and we hope to really bring the nation together with this fabulous opportunity. We will be sending a team of 8 boys to Rio, and they are already excited about the prospect.

The 2010 SCWC saw India emerge as victors, and the boys believe they have a chance to bring home the World Cup to Burundi! And why not!  Its a fabulous opportunity not only for our boys but also to spread the message held dear by the SCWC organisers that every child should have the right to the same opportunities and protection, whatever their history and their background. If you would like to get involved in this project, or in any other New Generation project, we would love to hear from you!
