Celebrating the African Child: New Generation’s Event Highlights Social Protection and Empowerment

The International Day of the African Child happens annually on June 16th.
As a movement working with street-connected children and young people in Burundi since 1998, New Generation celebrates the African child by speaking up about their rights, giving them a platform to express themselves, and celebrating the existence of each and every child.

The theme of the day revolved mainly around social protection, based on what African children, especially street-connected children, face in their daily lives.

200 children & young people attended the event, which included those who stay in the accommodations provided by New Generation and enrolled in the Road to School program as well as children from the Outreach program.

The event kicked off with a fun swimming pool session and games, including football.

As part of the activities, there was also a singing and dancing competition performed by the talented young people, which the audience enjoyed thoroughly.

The event ended around a delicious meal.

Seven popular national radio & TV channels covered the event, in order to spread awareness around the day.

Every African child deserves social protection as a fundamental right. By investing in providing social protection, we invest in the continent’s future.

Let’s work together to eliminate discrimination and promote the rights of African children. They have dreams and great potential to influence society positively and create a better world.
